Ministers dodge a tax bullet.

7:30pm Sunday, 2nd May 2010

Pastors and workers for charities have escaped a threat to their tax free allowances.  The Federal Government has decided against implementing a finding of the Henry Tax Review to tighten the allowances for workers for non-profits. The government review was released today (Sunday may 2)

The changes could have hit the personal allowances of ministers making money spent on housing, cars, computers taxable. Churches would have found it more expensive to employ a minister. A calculation in an earlier Eternity estimated a $20,000 increase would have been a common outcome.

Changes to the superannuation system will benefit low paid workers, which will include most christian ministers. Extra government payments of up to $500 a year will added to their super accounts.
