Over 800 people attended both days of the "Reachout" conference at Katoomba outside Sydney this weekend. The conference aims to encourage Christians to become missionaries, for which there is still a need according to African speaker Femi Adelaye.
"Australia has been generous as a sending country for missionaries, ranking third after Uk and Europe, and North America", he said. Mission has becaome global and Adelaye gave the example of Christians going to the Middle East as housemaids eas an example of third world evangelists. But he made it clear there are still plenty of opportinities for Australians.
"You don't have to be a special person to evangelise" said David Cook, Principal of the Sydney Missionary and Bible College, pointing out that ordinary people can proclaim the Gospel. But not in our own strength: "whatever your theology of the Holy Spirit you need to ask for his fullness daily".
The conference attracted a slightly larger crowd than last year and people stayed longer. The audience was overwhelmingly young. A large exhibition space was packed with stalls from over twenty organisations. They included a wide range of missionary societies, colleges and several stall mamgers told Eternity they had got a good response and serious enquiries.
