Some election briefs - Mad as hell - How you vote - Making Poverty History

1:00am Friday, 6th August 2010

1 Taking a stand The “Canberra Declaration” launched on July 21 calls for
a “renewal of Christian values”. Like the 2009 “Manhattan Declaration” led by Charles Colson, it highlights an anti-abortion stance and the defense of traditional marriage. Religious freedom “restricted by laws which, although appearing positive on first reading, have the potential to lead to unintended and unacceptable consequences” is a third focus. http://www.canberradeclaration.org

2 Mad as Hell “We’re not taking it anymore” say parents, friends and neighbours of people with disabilities who are campaigning  for “the opportunity to create a good life for our kids”. The campaign includes many Christians, some from the Kingsdene school in Sydney which is closing due to a lack of funding.  “Why are 80 year old parents STILL the sole carers for their 50 year old disabled children?” asks australiansmadashell.com.au

3 Meet me at the Town Hall Through the Make Poverty History campaign, World Vision is taking part in a number of electorate forums nationwide, offering the opportunity to hear how local candidates intend to show support for the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people. Melbourne band Fahrenheit 43, pictured,  will front two forums. http://www.makepovertyhistory.com.au/electoral-forums/

4Who you vote for Catholics still support the ALP heavily over the Coalition, Anglicans still support the Coalition heavily over the ALP while the “Other” Protestant grouping is more evenly divided (35% ALP, 41% LibNP) according to a report by polling group Essential Media.
