“This is one book that I did not enjoy writing” the winner of the Australian Christian Book of the Year told the audience at the award ceremony. Tom Frame, author of the winner “Losing my religion: Unbelief in Australia” described the “pillaging of my morale" as he read attacks on Christianity by writers he studied to write his account of the rise of irreligion in Australia.

“But if the Lord has called you do do something, you plough on”, he said.

The big selling "Trellis and the Vine" by Colin Marshal and Tony Payne  won second prize. The books publisher, Matthias Media has been able to penetrate the US and UK markets for this book—a breakthough triggered by the support of key bloggers who created an appetite for the book which argues that churches need de-cluttering to focus on gospel work.

Third spot went to Trudy Adams for her novel “Desolate Beauty”. This is the story of a young girl who simultaneously discovers herself and god in the midst of adversity.

But much of the spotlight at the awards ceremony in Melbourne went to two young writers’ unpublished works. Jack Burnham, won the Young Australian Christian Writer award for “Held in his Hands”, which as the judges said “takes us to places we will never see. Sarah Longden, 14, won the Australian Christian Teen Writer award for “Choices”, in which the effects of a devastating accident on the writers family are clearly described with her journey in faith and forgiveness.

The audience was held spellbound by readings from the two young writers' manuscripts.

Eternity readers will get a chance to read both pieces in our next edition or two.
